The European Commission (EC) has approved a Danish state aid scheme valued at approximately €5 billion to support offshore wind energy development, aligned with the Clean Industrial Deal and the European Union’s 2030 renewable energy targets. The scheme, notified under the Clean Industrial Deal State Aid Framework adopted in June 2025, will run for 20 years. It will support the construction and operation of two offshore wind farms, Hesselø and North Sea I Mid.
Hesselø is expected to have a minimum capacity of 0.8 GW and generate around 3.2 TWh annually, while North Sea I Mid is projected to have at least 1 GW capacity with an annual generation of approximately 4.6 TWh. The combined output of these projects is estimated to account for nearly 25 per cent of Denmark’s total electricity production recorded in the previous year. Additionally, support under the scheme will be provided through a two-way contract for difference mechanism, structured as a monthly variable premium.
In March 2026, the EC approved a €150 million Romanian state aid scheme to support electricity storage deployment, in line with the Clean Industrial Deal. The scheme will support the installation of at least 2,174 MWh of new electricity storage capacity in Romania. Additionally, the support will be provided as investment aid in the form of direct grants for the development of new standalone battery energy storage systems.
