European wind industry trade association Wind Europe has released a Call to Action with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and European ministers, calling for the EU to make electrification a strategic priority in the wake of the war against Iran.
WindEurope says that the war has reminded Europe, again, that fossil fuels need to be replaced by homegrown electricity, and quickly. The first reminder of this necessity was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, when Europe decided to repower its economy, scaling up wind and solar. The wind sector alone invested 45 billion euros in new capacity in 2025, meaning that wind now delivers 20 percent of Europe’s electricity.
However, electricity is still less than 25 percent of the energy used by the EU, which presents a threat to energy security. WindEurope is therefore calling on EU leaders to treat electrification as a strategic priority, rather than a policy footnote. This means cutting through complexity and putting European citizens, businesses and industries first by ensuring that homegrown electricity is abundantly available to homes and factories and is affordable.
The Call to Action has ten major points:
Fast-track permitting: Treat wind as an overriding public interest; apply tacit approval for the next 9 months.
Make the most of wind auctions – award at least 80 percent of wind bids resulting in no more artificial scarcity.
Repower ageing wind farms, tripling their output with fewer turbines.
Prioritise grid connections for mature, strategic projects and clear out zombie projects clogging the queue.
Scale up grid equipment manufacturing through framework contracts.
Multiply EU grid funding by 5 and crowd in private finance.
Zero VAT on heat pumps and electric vehicles.
Prioritise electrification in low and medium temperature industrial processes.
Permanently cut taxes on electricity – homegrown power should be the cheapest power.
Simplify State aid for industry switching to renewables via PPAs.
WindEurope said that the message expressed at its Annual Event, currently being held in Madrid (21st to 23rd April), is that Europe must electrify faster if it wants to restore competitiveness, security and prosperity.
The trade association also warns against the spread of disinformation about wind energy, which cannot be ignored. False claims are delaying projects, driving up costs and undermining our energy outlook.
For this reason, it has also released a report showing how these narratives spread. WindEurope believes it is time to cut through this noise and ground Europe’s energy future in truth.
