Qair has received planning consxent from The Highland Council for the onshore infrastructure associated with the 1 GW Ayre Offshore Wind Farm, a commercial scale floating offshore wind project located to the east of Orkney.
The Ayre Offshore Wind Farm is a landmark project set to transform the renewable energy landscape in the North of Scotland and beyond and underscores Qair’s growing role as a key player in the UK’s offshore wind sector, bringing innovative floating wind technology to Scottish shores.
The project, located to the east of Orkney, will not only generate enough clean electricity to power over 1.2 million homes but is also expected to create supply chain opportunities and skilled jobs across the North of Scotland during construction and throughout its operational lifetime.
Ayre will contribute to the UK’s first wave of commercial scale floating offshore wind projects. The project plays a pivotal role in advancing the UK’s 5 GW floating wind ambition by 2030, demonstrating how innovative technology can drive both energy security and economic growth in deeper waters. The decision represents a significant step forward for both the development of the project and Qair’s growing offshore wind ambitions in the UK.
The approved application covers the onshore transmission infrastructure required to connect the proposed 1 GW project to the national electricity network.
This milestone represents an important step in Qair UK’s expansion into offshore wind, adding 1 GW of capacity to the company’s growing UK portfolio, which already includes more than 5 GW of renewable energy projects in development across wind, solar and battery storage.
Ayre also builds on Qair Group’s proven track record in floating offshore wind, following the successful development of the Eolmed project in France, the country’s largest pilot floating wind farm. With Ayre, Qair is scaling up this expertise to deliver one of the UK’s most ambitious offshore wind projects.
“Securing consent for the onshore infrastructure at Ayre is a pivotal moment for Qair in the UK” said Markus Wierenga, CEO of Qair UK. “This project represents our first step into offshore wind development in the UK and reflects our ambition to deliver large-scale renewable energy projects that support the country’s energy security and net zero targets. We look forward to working with partners and stakeholders to bring Ayre to life and set a benchmark for floating offshore wind in the UK.”
