With a capacity of 40 MW and a storage capacity of 80 MWh, the plant is the largest battery storage facility in Swabia. Green Flexibility is investing a total of around €35 million in the project.

More than 80 guests from politics, the energy sector, and the surrounding communities accepted the invitation to Balzhausen. They experienced firsthand how a large scale battery storage system works and what specific role storage will play in a stable, renewable energy system in the future.

The welcoming remarks by Klaus Holetschek, CSU parliamentary group leader in the Bavarian State Parliament, underscored the importance of battery storage for the energy transition. Especially in times of growing geopolitical challenges, it became clear: the expansion of renewable energies requires storage technologies that make electricity available when it is needed – thus combining security of supply, grid stability, and regional economic development.

The Balzhausen site also plays a special role due to its technical integration. The battery storage system is the first installation connected to the so-called ‘feed-in socket’ of the LEW distribution network. This pilot project enables grid-oriented integration of generation and storage facilities, thus creating new perspectives for the use of existing grid connection points.

Barbara Plura, Asset Manager at LEW distribution network and Project Manager of the ‘feed-in socket’, commented: “We are very pleased that the first system connected to our feed-in socket is now operational. Battery storage systems are indispensable for the energy system of the future. Especially in Bavarian Swabia, with its high density of photovoltaics and strong production of renewable energy, they help to use the electricity grid more efficiently.”

Christoph Lienert, Co-Founder and COO of green flexibility, concluded: “What I take away from this project is that you have to be courageous. And that’s exactly what we are. Balzhausen shows that new solutions become possible when network operators, municipalities, landowners, partners, and we as operators take joint responsibility. Such projects don’t come about because everything is easy – but because you are willing to break new ground.”

Green Flexibility will commission at least five more storage facilities in 2026, thus consistently expanding its flexible, grid-supporting storage infrastructure throughout Germany.
